John Simm and Billie Piper have been cast as former lovers in a new BBC2 thriller written by David Hare.

The pair, whose characters of The Master and the Doctor's companion Rose never met on screen in Doctor Who, will have leading roles in the thriller Collateral starring Carey Mulligan.

Set over the course of four days, the four-part drama explores the spiraling repercussions surrounding the fatal shooting of a pizza deliveryman.

Refusing to accept this is a random act of senseless violence, Mulligan’s tough and single-minded detective Inspector Kip Glaspie investigates the crime.

Simm, who is returning to the upcoming series of Doctor Who as The Master, plays a politician who becomes instantly embroiled in the plot through his turbulent relationship with his troubled and unpredictable ex-girlfriend Karen played by Piper.

Nicola Walker, the star of ITV crime drama Unforgotten, plays Jane Oliver, a compassionate vicar who struggles to conceal her affair with the only witness to the crime.

“Hare’s electrifying writing acts as a moving spotlight, asking crucial questions about the state of modern Britain,” according to the BBC.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, added: “Collateral is a highly imaginative, thought-provoking and utterly contemporary state of the nation thriller written by Britain's foremost political dramatist. It is a great honour to welcome Sir David Hare back to the BBC.”

The drama, which is expected to premiere on BBC2 towards the end of this year, has also been co-produced by Netflix.

CAREY Mulligan has been announced as the leading actor in the new thriller by playwright David Hare for the BBC.

But what is the show about? Who's starring in it and when is it on TV?

Here's what you need to know about the show...

Carey Mulligan will be leading the all-star cast
What is Collateral about?

Collateral is a thriller set over the course of four days and follows the apparent random death of a pizza delivery guy.

Detective Inspector Kip Glaspie has been left in charge of the investigation, and refuses to accept the murder as a random act of violence.

As the next few days unfold, Glaspie is caught up in a whirlwind investigation to track down the killer and uncover the darker underbelly behind the attack.

Meanwile, politician David Mars gets caught up in the drama through his turbulent relationship with his troubled and unpredictable ex Karen, and vicar Jane Oliver is forced to conceal her affair with the only witness to the crime.

David Hare, who wrote the script, said of the announcement: "I've been writing drama for the BBC since 1973, but this is my first original series. I'm thrilled that it has such a stunningly gifted cast."

Carey will be taking on the role of the straight-laced detective on a murder case
Who's starring in Collateral?
Carey Mulligan (Inspector Kip Glaspie)

Carey Mulligan has racked up starring roles in a string of acclaimed films.

Becoming the breakout star of 2009's An Education, she has since starred alongside Keira Knightley in Never Let Me Go, played the sought-after Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby and was Ryan Gosling's love interest in 2011's Drive.

She is also going to be starring in new films Mudbound and Wildlife, both being released this year.

John Simm (David Mars)

John Simm first came to public attention as the time-travelling detective Sam Tyler in 2006's Life on Mars.

Before that he played pill popping slacker Jip in the cult clubbing classic Human Traffic alongside Danny Dyer.

Since then, he has taken on mostly television roles, and has acted in Code of a Killer, Intruders and this year's US TV drama The Catch alongside Six Feet Under's Peter Krause.

The Sun also exclusively revealed that he will be returning to his role as The Master in the new series of Doctor Who after becoming a fan favourite after appearances with David Tennant's Doctor from 2007- 2010.

John Simm will be playing a bent politician who has ties to the crime
Billie Piper (Karen Mars)

Billie Piper has become a sought after actress after starting her career as a pop princess back in the late 90s.

Now, after a starring role as Rose in Doctor Who, she has been given her own leading roles in shows including Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Penny Dreadful.

She has also made a move into film, and is starring in upcoming release City of Tiny Lights alongside Riz Ahmed.

Billie Piper will be returning to our screens in the new thriller
Nicola Walker (Jane Oliver)

Nicola has acted in a string of well-established TV shows in the UK.

These include playing DCI Cassie Stuart in Unforgotten (which will return next year), Last Tango in Halifax where she plays Gillian, and took on the role of Sharon in Babylon.

She has also taken to the stage, earning recognition as Beatrice in the National Theatre's performance of A View From The Bridge.

Nicola has become a staple actress for primetime TV
When can I watch Collateral on TV?

The four-part drama has just gone into production - and so won't be on our TV screens for a while.

When it does air, it will be shown on BBC2, presumably in a late night slot given its subject matter.

Leider gibt's irgendwie noch nichts Neues zum Thema Sendetermin ...
